In the face of sadness, grief, even tragedy, words offer comfort and strength. By reading other people’s words, we are given the comfort of knowing we are not alone. By writing with our own words, we are given the chance of molding our experiences for the sake of others.

The writing for healing workshop led by Palanca Award-winning poet Lawrence ypil will help participants discover the power of words to give shape to loss and meaning to tragedy.Through guided reflections, writing exercises, and journaling tips, the workshop will show the different ways creative expression through writing can helptoheal not just ourselves, but also the people around us.

Gearing Up for the New Year

29 December 2009 1:49 pm

It’s been a productive year for me and Brain Food, and we’re gearing up for an even busier 2010! In addition to trying to set up a website exclusively for Brain Food, we’ve already mapped out the first half of our year. In addition to the regular summer workshops – this year we’re offering Fiction Writing, Comics Creation, and Watercolor Painting – and the usual creativity and communications modules for schools and corporations, we’re trying out a couple of new workshops. I’ll announce the details in a few days, so watch out for it!

Comics Talk at Southville

18 September 2009 9:53 pm

I just returned from Southville International School today, where I gave a talk on Philippine comics as part of their Art Appreciation class. The challenge was to distill more than a hundred years of Philippine comics history and find some unifying idea or thesis statement just so it won’t be a dry chronological list.

Ultimately, I focused on the idea of comics as a reflection of our country’s culture, not just in the events and situations depicted in these stories, but also in terms of storytelling sensibilities. I talked about the idea of appropriation, of taking an American medium and making it our own, of adapting Japanese manga influences to depict the Filipino experience. It was a bit tiring because of the venue’s geographic distance from my usual haunts, but ultimately a rewarding one. (Thanks Inez for the invite!)

Brain Food offers workshops and seminars that help you communicate your message in the best, most effective way possible. Our offerings are organized by module, which are divided into two broad categories: creative forums, and practical forums. From here, we design modules according to your specific goals and needs. Whether they’re one-session workshops or four-week seminars, we make sure that we help you express exactly what is on your mind.

In the past we’ve offered workshops comics creation and creative writing at Fully Booked, and conducted talks on public speaking and speech delivery for various corporate clients.
